BIG CROWD TO SEE MODIFIEDS DUKE IT OUT
Jeremy Doss took the lead from Travis Thirkettle on a lap 23 restart and never looked back to score his third victory of the season, and regain his championship lead in the Spears Modified Series “General Tire 60 presented by OPTIMA Batteries” at Irwindale Speedway Saturday night. Doss was able to hold off Thirkettle after the only other yellow flag on lap 26 and stretched his lead to just over two seconds at the checkered flag.
Thirkettle held on for a solid second, after taking the lead from Andrew Anderson at the initial start. William Guevara and Andrew Anderson fought tooth and nail for third, all the way to the checkered flag, with Guevara holding off the Rookie-of-the-Year competitor. Anderson recovered from a contact related spin by Travis McCullough on the first lap 23 restart, to score the fourth place position. McCullough also came from the back to finish as the final driver in the top-five.
Jim Mardis dropped out of the event on the lap 23 yellow, while running third. Incoming championship leader Eddie Secord ran up front early, but faded to sixth at the finish, just ahead of a closing Jimmy Sloan, in a near photo finish.
After coming back from racing his Super Late Model in the Southern Super Series and scoring two top-five finishes, Doss was happy to visit Victory Lane again.
“It feels really good to win and I’ve been racing as many cars as I can”, Doss stated in Victory Lane. “I think that makes me better as a driver, racing week in and week out. I have to thank Eddie Wilcox and Corey for the opportunity to drive this car. Also, my dad Mike Doss, my Crew Chief Kaine, and Dave Cooley for spotting for me. We had a bad fast racecar and we are only going to make it better.”
The next event for the SPEARS Modified Series will be at Kern County Raceway on June 26th. They will join the Spears Srl Southwest Tour Super Late Models as well as the Pro late Models presented by Sigma Performance Services. The BMR Academy will round out the featured classes along with a huge fireworks show.
